Downton-Style Corset/Girdle

Oh wow, thank you SO MUCH for all of the sweet comments about our bathroom makeover – that was so exciting! A week later, I still love it, big time. Cleaning it is even almost pleasant, if you can believe it. I said almost. It is most definitely more satisfying and less terrifying than it was before the renovation. So. Yay.

Anyway …

This is a busy week for me, you guys. Next week too. I’ve got lots of bridal appointments all in a row and lots of stuff to work on in between. It kills me that I don’t have much free time to check in here and show you the progress, because everything is SO GOOD. And so fun. And my ladies are the all the sweetest. And yes, I’m totally bragging, but I won’t apologize for it one bit. It’s exciting!

One of my sweet, adorable brides is a friend I’ve known for years and I was completely over the moon when she announced her engagement and asked me to make her gown. And then I totally lost my dang mind when she told me her inspiration: Downton Abbey. And not because I like costumes or whatever, but because nothing could suit this cutie more than that lean, drapey, Edwardian style. It’s SO PERFECT FOR HER. Plus, we’re not making a costume – we’re pulling the silhouette and feel from that era and keeping the focus on elegance and luxury. And it doesn’t hurt that we found an amazing, embroidered French lace to use here and there, but we’ll talk about that later.

Anyway, even though we’re being very particular about keeping things timeless and not costume-y, we still need to make sure the foundation is perfect. And what could be more perfect than a period-appropriate underpinning?

Technically, this is a girdle, but we’re saying “corselette” because it’s prettier. There isn’t a ton of boning – just a few strategically placed along the vertical seams and three at the front waist – and elastic panels in the back used to really hug and smooth the body. The point is not to enhance, but to flatten and straighten. And to be pretty. Duh. The best part is that the lace used over the front panel was taken from her mom’s wedding gown. So sweet, right?

I really, really love it. By the way, I used this 1920′s corset pattern from Reconstructing History as a jumping-off point. I had to make quite a few adjustments, but if you’re interested in making one for yourself, it’s a good place to start. I used silk satin with a stiff woven interfacing and lined it in silk taffeta – this baby gets the job done while remaining lightweight and delicate. Just what a lady wants in her unmentionables, am I right? Lace and ribbons don’t hurt either.

Bathroom Makeover: Reveal!

You know what bums me out so much? Checking in daily with a blogger who has clearly stopped blogging daily. I just want you to know that I know that I am dropping the ball. My only defense is that I am really tired and really grumpy and really stretched out, literally. It takes so much self control to not set things on fire with my eyes, that sometimes blogging just can’t happen. I’m the worst. I hate it. I’m doing my best. And what is so hilarious about it all is that I just wrote a post for What To Expect When You’re Expecting describing how brilliant I’ve been feeling lately and how the bad stages of pregnancy seem to just magically erase from memory. And apparently … JOKE’S ON ME! Actually, that is pretty funny. Anyway, if you’d like to read a little bit about my delusion, please click over and enjoy.

And since I only seem to get my a$$ in front of this keyboard once a week, let’s go ahead and make this post a doozy, shall we? I have bathroom makeover pics to share! Sooo … remember the before?

Well you’d better go get some plastic tarps, ’cause I’m about to blow your mind, Gallagher-style …

Paint-a Them Shades

Sooo … what’s new?

I feel like maybe I need to rearrange my schedule a bit or something. I have always, since the beginning, written my posts in the mornings before getting to work, but lately … *radio buzz*.

My brain isn’t really functioning in the mornings at present. Which is why I’ve cut back so much on blogging. I just can’t seem to make anything happen. I want to show you things, but then I sit down at the computer and I feel like slapping my hand on the keyboard a couple of times and moving on to something more exciting like cake. Not that you don’t excite me. I don’t excite me.

Maybe I need to come up with a new format. Like, the blog version of pointing at things and grunting. I’m gonna try it out today – you let me know if it works.

Boring. Gray. Crooked. Lame.

Me like more now.

******************

I’m guessing that wasn’t entirely satisfying. But my lampshades satisfy me very much. And yeah, I just spray painted cheap Target shades, inside and out, and that was the end of it. Weee.

I have like two things left to do in this room and then I’ll give you a full picture show. I’ll say upfront that I think there’s a lot of wha? happening in here, but it makes me really, really happy nonetheless. I can’t even look at pictures of our bed without wanting to get jump back in. Those pillows!

Tiny, TINY Luxuries

Whoa, I got a lot of things done around the house this weekend. And I spent a lot of time in front of the tv. And I had an awesome client fitting. And some girlfriend time.  AND I managed to also get a little sun on my nose, despite our non-existent spring. So even though I felt lazy the entire time, it was actually a rather productive weekend. Way to go, Veronica.

None of the house stuff was super major – I focused mostly on the bathroom. Which shouldn’t have needed any of my work, p.s., since it was just completely renovated (I totally imagined coming home from vacation and just needing a new bathmat or something), but they decided to paint the entire room and all of the trim and door with flat paint. It’s a bathroom. In FLAT paint. It lasted less than a week before it was covered in water marks and a layer of immovable dust. Grrrr. Anyway, it’s getting very close to being amazing now. I just have a couple of finishing touches and then I’ll show everything off at once. I’m starting to really love it!

I also accomplished a couple of super tiny tasks that I’ve had on my to-do list for a million years. This one being totally minor, but really satisfying:

closet shoe storage

Yeah, I covered my shoe storage area in a pretty fabric. That’s it. I know it’s totally nothing, and it feels kinda silly talking about here, but ohmigoodness in reality it feels super luxurious. Probably because for months it was just a horrible piece of plywood.

IMG_3084

Which is now covered in fabric.

I know. I totally just blew your mind. But it’s seriously major for us. Here’s a slight peek at the set up, by the way:

shoe storage

This (now beautifully covered) board sits on top of four Antonius storage units from Ikea. Keith has two and I have two and then all of our shirts and jackets hang above. There’s also a storage tower to the left which holds sweaters and pants. This whole arrangement takes up one wall in our bedroom and is then covered by floor-to-ceiling curtains (which also hide the closet door – I keep dresses and boots and stuff in there). I can’t tell you how efficient this is for us – those $20 storage units seem so much roomier than any dresser I’ve ever owned. No kidding. And the curtains keep everything uncluttered and clean-looking.

Anyway, I know that was a lot of excitement all at once, so I’ll just leave you with that. But seriously, it’s tiny little unnecessary improvements that make a space feel special, don’t you think?

Lauren’s Custom Lace Dress – Complete!

Oh man, I really want to show you the completed dress from last week. It’s soooo goooood. I honestly kind of miss having it around – I’ve grown so attached. Unfortunately, I forgot to snap photos during the final fitting (too much happy crying and brains exploding and stuff) and now all I’ve got are a few shots on the hanger. I mean, I’ll show you these and everything, but just know, this is NOTHING compared to how amazing this dress looks on the bride.

Ohmigoodness, I love this so much. I love it like I didn’t make it – I hope that makes me sound less obnoxious, going on and on about it. I can’t help it! This dress means so much to me for so many reasons – not only did I have a ton of creative freedom, which is super exciting, but we used laces I’ve been holding onto for years, just waiting for the perfect project. And one of them was the leftover lace from my own wedding veil, which was so cool to work with again.

On top of all that, the bride, Lauren, is an incredibly kind, sweet, charming person with the most amazing style. Every fitting was a breeze and all of the laces worked together so well (five, total) – it was absolute kismet from start to finish. I’m DYING for her to get married already and send me pictures!

And I’m also thrilled that every project this year is equally as unique and exciting. So, even though I’m missing this dress like crazy, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one. GOOD. STUFF. !!!

News!

Hey look – I have a new website.

What!

Which will include this soon:

veronica sheaffer shop the accessories

Double what!

I have to photograph everything first, but I’m pretty excited! I’ve tried this before, but always felt like things were a bit too clunky. Same goes for the old website. I want my whole life to be as clean and effortless as possible now, and I’m streamlining everything in my path. I’m also adding some special touches to the shopping process – like pretty little packages tied up in bows and fancy certificates of authentication – so you can brag to everyone that your goods are certifiably fancy. And I’ve added links directly to images on Pinterest, so you can now pin your favorite styles (something my web hosting service doesn’t provide automatically – weird). Anyway, I hope you like the new updates and you’ll tell all of your friends when the shop opens up! I’ll keep you updated as the goods roll out. xoxo

Hidden Wall Outlet

Our internet was out all day yesterday. Waah. I was pretty relaxed about it until I wasn’t. And then poor Keith spent all night working on it. Poor us. Happily, everything is back up and running now. Lucky, EVERYONE. Haha

Anyway … my brother and I painted the dining room on Sunday, and it is soooo goooood. You’ll have to wait for pictures, because I have to change a few things and it’s too dark to take a picture now anyway, but you can take my word for it. I love it.

In the meantime, let me tell you about this nifty, little thing:

Hidden outlet behind artwork via My Hands Made It

I’ve complained to you before about the rando electrical outlet in the middle of this wall. It was ugly and stupid, albeit conveniently located for our coffee and toast equipment. I was tired of looking at it, so I took advantage of this genius’s idea and covered it with artwork mounted on hinges.

Now I, too, can call myself a genius. I thought maybe it would be too fussy for an outlet we use repeatedly throughout the day, but it’s actually kind of satisfying and so tidy. Keith has requested that all of our artwork be hung with hinges – it’s significantly more fun that way. We could hide things all over the place. Anyway, it’s pretty cool, and it makes our kitchen look WAY better. Yay!

Fancy Bucket Bench

Hey guys. It’s super dark here this morning, so I can’t take any pictures for you. Boo. I was so excited to show you our new kitchen table too. Wah wah. I love it, by the way. I am seriously loving the kitchen in general, even though it still needs A LOT of work – I pretty much need to reorganize every single thing we store in here. I moved all of the large cooking things – like the crock pot and the pressure cooker and stuff like that – under the bench yesterday, which cleared up a ton of space in the pantry.

Oh yeah, there IS something I can show you …

using buckets to make an indoor bench

Hahahaha. Yeeeah. I made the kitchen bench out of Home Depot buckets. And I’m not sorry for it either. It’s surprisingly sturdy and the perfect height. And the whole thing is meant to be temporary anyway. Apartment-living, yo. Anyway, I wanted this project to be as close to zero dollars as possible, and those buckets were less than $3 each. I just screwed them into the boards and added the foam and fabric on top. And there’s no reason for anyone to suspect I used buckets, unless I show them, because it’s so super weird. P.S. the handles don’t stick out like that – this was just a practice run before I got to work. Anyway, it saved me a lot of money and a lot of time, so I win. Way to go, buckets!

Some day I’ll bring my camera home and take nice pictures of all of this stuff, I promise.

Les Touches Rug Tutorial

Suuup. You guys, I am all out of sorts this morning. I’ve got work stuff to do and house stuff to do, but all I really want is movie and chips and cake stuff to do.

——

I’m trying to find some way to segue out of that opening, but … obviously all I can think about now is movies, chips and cake.

Anyway …

Remember the super cute rug I painted for the guest room? I love it so much in there – the pattern is so quirky and fun and graphic and it works so well with all of the other colors and patterns in the room. “Les Touches” is the name of a fabric pattern by Brunschwig & Fils and it’s not available as a rug, to the best of my knowledge (if it were, it would cost approximately one million dollars. Or thereabouts), but I really wanted that pattern. And I also wanted to spend zero dollars. So I took two Erslev rugs from Ikea that I had laying around and went to town. Like this:

les touches rug tutorial _ diy snow leopard rug _ painted rug

DIY LES TOUCHES RUG

Materials

  • Erslev rug from Ikea (or the like)
  • Paint (I used regular wall paint – I even used glossy paint, ’cause that’s all I had on hand)
  • Paintbrush – a 1″ flat artist’s brush works really well

Instructions

Begin by studying your pattern – I’ve broken it into sections for you here:

diy les touches

I didn’t measure or mark anything out on my rug because the design is so organic – nothing about it needs to be perfect. I started with the borders, using a light hand and just a dab of paint, then rubbing in the paint to create the different shapes. The original pattern has some roughness to each dot, which is pretty easy to achieve on a rug. Less is more with the paint, by the way – I had zero seepage onto the other side and no crunchiness when dry.  Then I painted the center pattern (you can see I’ve got two repeats of my center pattern – one near the middle and one all the way on the left edge), and then the “filler”.  My pattern is larger and more spaced out than the original, but I didn’t want the rug to be too busy. My pattern is also sorta wacky and definitely not symmetrical, but it doesn’t ruin the rug at all. It still looks awesome on the floor.

diy les touches snow leopard rug tutorial

P.S. I wasn’t the first to dream up the DIY Les Touches thing – it’s been done before with Sharpies on furniture here and here. And many other places as well, I’m sure. Paint is better on a rug, but if you want to use fabric, just grab a marker, yo.

Entryway Styling

Okay, first of all, our “entryway” is actually just one half of a wall in our dining room. But some sort of area where we can throw our keys and sit down to put on our winter boots is necessary. We had a small sideboard here before, but there was too much white in the room after we got the new credenza, so that went into the guest room. And this is what we’ve got going now:

And I looooovvve iiiiitttt. I just got the blue velvet chair on Craigslist for $35 and it’s so perfect. Despite it looking like a giant dirtball here, which it does not look like in real life. Gross. P.S. I spent at least a month looking for a blue, velvet chair on Craigslist.  There was another one, but the weirdos wouldn’t return messages, despite having it listed for the entire month I was searching. Anyway, I found a replacement. Joke’s on them.

Ohmigod, I need to have that chair cleaned immediately. I’m thoroughly disgusted now. Ew.

Anyway … how cute is all of this? I also just got the red architect’s lamp on Ebay. So many new, fun things. It makes me feel fancy. The dining room makes me feel fancy, people, and I don’t mind saying it. You know, except for the pile of dirt masquerading as a chair in the corner there. Next up on my list: painting the giant dining room table. I’m taking a major risk with this one, but I know it will be amazing. I hope it will be amazing. Ohmigod. Please be amazing.
