Custom Bathing Suit + Custom Cover-Up

I’m all hopped up and excited to get started on my little bathing suit, but I have to wait for the fabric to arrive.  Stupid.  I want it NOW.  To calm myself, I have directed my attention towards a fancy cover-up.  And of course now I have to order fabric for that as well and twiddle my thumbs, distracting myself with actual work until it arrives.  Dumb.  In the meantime, I will tell you all about it, ’cause I’m really excited.

florid waters caftanOkay so Anthropologie has this really super awesome caftan online that is seriously COOL.  According to the reviews though, everyone seems to hate it in person – the fabric is grody or something.  That will, of course, have no affect on me, because I’m making my own version in silk and can fix the odd fit issues it seems to have as well.  Oh and mine won’t cost $150.  I also don’t want it to be that long.  I’m 5’4″ and as much as I love summer maxi dresses, they make me look like a 10-year-old dressing up in mommie’s clothes.  I’ll make mine to hit mid-thigh.

I doubt I’ll be using a pattern, but if I do, it will be M5855 by McCall’s.  It is pretty much the exact same thing, minus the trim, and it ties under the bust instead of at the sides (which seems to be the source of the fit issues in the original).

The coolest part about this is the print, of course.  I LOVE IT.  So bold and all-around awesome.  I want something similar.  It’s hard to find a strong pattern that looks expensive and summery and not geriatric, but I think I’ve found just the thing in silk georgette.

custom georgette cover upI love the floral so much – it’s got such a great 1950′s-style abstract feel to it and the colors are exactly what I want.  I’ll do the trim in a taupy zebra print and a solid coral.  I’m kinda crazy in love with this whole thing and I think it’s perfect for a fancy Vegas poolside.
